Counseling

Counseling and Human Development

The Department of Counseling and Human Development provides services at the Belleville, Sam Wolf Granite City, and Red Bud campuses and at many off-campus sites.

Counseling programs and services are both academic and therapeutic, and are designed to foster academic, personal and career success. Below is a brief explanation of Southwestern's counseling services:

Assessment and Course Placement: MISSION SUCCESS

The main goal of the assessment process is to gather information about your current academic skills. The assessment process will tell you the proper level to start your math and English classes. For more information and a schedule of assessment dates, see the assessment and course placement page.

Academic Services

Counselors will help you make educational and vocational decisions compatible with your goals for completing an associate's degree or a certificate. Counselors will assist you in transferring to a four-year college or university. You are strongly encouraged to see a counselor early in your academic studies to insure proper program and course selection. Academic Success Workshops will help you develop or improve your academic skills and study habits. Math Anxiety Workshops will help you gain control of your fear of math and improve your math grades while having fun.

Career Services

Career Services help you explore careers that relate to your interests, personality, abilities, values, and practical needs. Career activities lead students through the career development process including self-awareness, career exploration, and job placement. Career Decision-Making Workshops will help you explore careers that relate to your interests and personality. The Career Decision Pyramid & Resources will help you identify your personal level of career clarity and the resources, services and web links that can assist you in progressing toward your career decision. Review the Career Exploration & Decision-Making Resources Brochure for a complete list of resources.

Personal Growth Activities

Personal growth activities and Adults in Transition Workshops serve two purposes:
  1. Assist students with psychological, emotional, social, or cultural difficulties and;
  2. Teach students successful living strategies to navigate life's transitions and reach their educational, career, and personal goals.
